In exchange for full disclosure of his invention and for prohibiting others from producing, using, selling, offering for sale, or importing the patented product or a product directly derived from a patented process without his permission, the government grants the patentee a territorial statutory right known as a patent.

Up to 31 months after the earliest priority date, the Indian Patent Office accepts Indian applications, PCT International applications, PCT National Phase applications, and convention applications up to 12 months after the earliest priority date.
